Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis #1 (live-ish)

October 6, 2014

bahamutdandyAnother show up for a live-ish review. This time it’s Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, which is apparently based on a children’s card game.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe episode opens up with a flashback to 2000 years ago where we basically have a Final Fantasy-esque summon-fest. A huge dragon, whom I’m assuming is Bahamut, is destroying a citadel via Macross Missile Massacre, prompting its inhabitants to counter via summon magic. Of course, as we all know, Bahamut is traditionally one of the more powerful summon spells in Final Fantasy, and these guys seem to only have mid to upper mid-tier summons on hand. So sucks to be them.

Jumping to the present, we open to Final Fantasy-esque characters riding on horses, jumping atop rooftops, because fuck, if you can’t ride your horse on rooftops, what good are they? AmIRite? These guys have a running fight whilst a trio of incompetent criminals try to kidnap some homely wenches. It ends in animal cruelty, which as an animal lover, made me wince, but on the whole, I dig the whole sequence. It portends that things will be rad and a tad absurd, but in a good way.

We cut back to the criminals, whose slave caravan thingy gets busted up by who appears to be Terra from Final Fantasy 6, in her Esper form. I gotta stop and mention this ’cause she just mentioned “Helheim”, which is the exact same name as was used in the recently wrapped up Kamen Rider Gaim.

Hmm, I’m abit over halfway through, I like this so far. Apparently it’s based on some card game, but it’s pretty fun stuff so far. The bit where Moloch gets summoned and licked by the stray was nice.

Alrighty then, episode done. It’s a good ep. I’ve nothing bad to say.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYeah, it’s not something that’s grabbing me by the lapels, but this is the best show I’ve seen of the new season so far. It’s nice that despite being based on a children’s card game, they concentrate more on having a grand ol’ adventure rather than some lame “I’m da best sammanah lookit EXODIAAA!” nonsense.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI’m not super intrigued but I’d be fine with recommending this for now.
