TMNT (2012) S2E15: Mazes & Mutants

May 8, 2014

yodawgUntil Landon starts blogging about anime, I’m just going to cover Mecha Guignol in non-anime/Americano filth! This week, straight from the icky sticky slimy sewers of New York, we take a look at those mutant miscreants… the X-Me-no, Landon likes the X-Men, so we’ll look at the other bunch of teenage mutants, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Look, let’s go straight to the bottom line (which we’re putting in the upper middle of this post), this episode of those who are known as the Turtles, is aaaa-maze-ing.

We’ve had love letters to nerdery and geekery before. Adventure Time had “Card Wars”, Regular Show had “But I Have a Receipt” and even My Little Pony had “Oubliettes and Ogres”. Heck, that Neverwinter online game even had a tabletop event on April 1st 2014 where all the PCs were game pieces and the NPCs were giant players (and there’s even a gazebo with an arrow sticking out of it).

So, this episode of the Turtles is pretty much that. And is still awesome because of it. It’s got loads of references, including obscure ones. It’s got toys coming out, for which I may now get all of, instead of just Wizardonnie and you know what else it’s got? This is something those other D&D tributes don’t have. This episode’s got Paul fucking Reubens as a guest voice. That’s right. It’s got Stan Lansing’s nephew from Murphy Brown.

It might not be the first tribute episode of its ilk anymore. It might not change the fact that Big Bang Theory is an embarassingly international fuckfestival of suck. And it’s not gonna retcon the fact that Peter Parker tongue wrestled the Thing. But goddamit, this episode…
