Bride of the Son of the 12 Days – Day 11 – Aircraft Carriers

December 15, 2012

girlsunborezerGirls und Panzer is dull. The two episodes I watched were a whole lot of nothing coupled with the absence of stuff. Girls talk about tanks. Girls look for tanks. The notion of driving a tank is kinda there, but not really. People say the tanks become more of a thing as it goes on, but I wouldn’t know because I went into a tedium-induced coma before I reached that point and don’t care for all that military pageantry fetishism to weather such a bout of boredom.

But damn was that final pan-out in the first episode hilarious.

I watched the first episode with a buddy of mine who does enjoy this sort of military shit. He liked Upotte! because he loves his gun porn, so when we were looking for things to watch on Crunchyroll one day I suggested we give Girls und Panzer a try. I figured he’d like it a bit more than I would because of his biases and stuff.

Nope. He was bored too. Too much girls, not enough panzer. This is a guy who likes stuff like K-On and Aria a good deal more than I do (Meaning he actually likes them to some extent), and even he found the first episode of Girls und Panzer dull.

Oh, and a side note: That nickname the fans have for the series, Garupan or whatever? Yeah, no, I refuse to use it. It sounds like a cat hacking up a hairball or something. How people can bring themselves to say that word with a straight face is beyond my mortal comprehension.

So yeah, as the episode ended, I was relieved the thing was over. Then the camera panned out and revealed that all of this was taking place on a big ass aircraft carrier. My friend and I cracked up. Delirious laughter– the sort of laughter characters in a horror movie break into after they realize the slasher monster man was finally put down after rising back up from the dead during the post-credits scene– the bleak laughter of surviving the absurd.

That reveal was a genuinely great moment. Shame it occurred in such a lame series.

That ship was and is still my favourite part of the series.

    >Too much girls, not enough Panzer.
This is exactly what I said when I dropped it at episode 1, bored to apathy (“death” or “tears” is too strong a word here). The zoom-out was literally the only thing I enjoyed there. But I’ve since picked it back up again, and after episode 3 or so, it really has become more about the Panzer with every week except episode 7. The current battle is a full-on in-snow showdown against the hilariously Soviet school’s army of 15 singing Russian tanks and features some well-done tactical maneuvers and several intense chase scenes – this is serious business. They’re done talking about tanks and they’ve started using the crap out of them. I left the first episode completely unconvinced, and later the second, but I’m now actually quite invested in the series. Not saying you have to give it another chance, just that I did and it was worth it.

GaruPan is a pretty dumb nickname. I cringe a little bit every time I hear/use it. But I can’t really think of a better one besides maybe just Panzer. GuP sounds even worse.

I’m not sure where the nickname came from either. I just use it because Girls Und Panzer takes up more space on Twitter.

“Garupan” is the Japanese fandom contraction for it, much like “Oreimo” or “Chuu2koi”.

And unfortunate that it didn’t click for you two episodes in. Episode 3 has tank action plus an even LARGER carrier, and episode 4 features the first of many tank battle sequences that have made GuP the hit of the season it’s become.

If you want to just see the tank battle itself, they have clips on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zl4AXwJYEEk
