Totally Biased (And Completely Correct) Fall Season Assumptions
Seems like I’m watching a hell of a lot more anime this go-around than I have in, like, forever. Not that all of these series are totally uberly awesome or whatever, but I’m still watching a shitload.
The short of it: There’s plenty that’s watchable, and a few series that look to be on the verge of being pretty awesome, but nothing’s sticking out the way Occult Academy, Tatami Galaxy, and Cobra did earlier this year (Or the way Durarara! looked initially.).
The long of it continues below.
The MEH: Shit that ain’t soul-shattering, but still isn’t worth bothering with.
The World Only God Knows
TWOGK is the worst thing I’ve seen this season. It thinks it’s subverting moe/harem/dating sim tropes, but it does it in the same way Family Guy thinks it’s subverting US pop culture: By jumping up and down like an idiot, pointing at the clichés and screaming “LOOK! LOOK AT THAT! IT’S A THING! LOOK AT THE THING! IT’S A THING! LOOK! I KNOW WHAT THAT THING IS! DO YOU?”
Yeah. No. Go away.
Psychic Detective Yakumo
I literally made it five minutes into the first episode before I got bored and deleted the file. ‘Nuff said.
The ALRIGHT: Shit that ain’t shit and doesn’t make you feel like you wasted ~30 minutes of your life (but does little else).
When the series concentrates on the two dudes and lets them rift off of each other, it’s pretty solid. The dialogue’s good and the two dudes have a good rapport.
When the series tries to do anything else, it’s flat-out boring.
Way too much of the latter happens. I just can’t get into it.
Otome Youkai Zakuro
I love the youkai. That toothy rabbit is awesome, and the gourd-headed kids are adorable. The elephant dude is pretty snazzy as well.
But when Zakuro goes off into one of her speeches about equal rights for monsters, it feels like an episode of Captain Planet. It doesn’t help that the villain of the second episode played like one of the Eco-Freak villains from that series, all but twirling his mustache as he tried to get the main crew to kill the distressed spirit that was scaring the people working on his hotel. It’s one thing to deal with these sorts of issues and make them parallel real life issues and it’s another thing to turn everything into an evangelical revival, replacing fire and brimstone with Hollywood liberalism.
Also, it cracks me up that Zakuro gets like that, only to go back to her mansion and have raccoon slave girls tend to her whims. Hilarious.
But everything else about the series is fairly solid.
Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
It’s like a black hole of moe. It so doesn’t want to obey the laws of anime physics that in defying the rules it defines the rules. Or something like that.
Remove the brother and this would be a solid series. Keep him in the mix and it all feels like a different form of wish fulfilment.
Arakawa Under the Bridge 2
Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Lots of good bits brought down by the series’ need to take itself seriously. Bleh.
The SOLID: Shit that’s worth watching but ain’t gonna rock your world.
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
I was shocked (SHOCKED!) that this was even watchable, much less one of the more decent series I’ve seen this season.
The world is pretty awesome. Everyone is either Zenigata or Lupin: You’re either a cop trying to capture a criminal or one of said criminals trying to steal shit. I don’t think we’ve seen a normal person in this series, and I don’t think we will. It’s kinda awesome in that regard.
The rest is OK, but the world is cool and the villains have some style. I feel dirty for actually liking this show.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
Talked about this one a lot already. Has a hell of a lot of potential for humor, and so far it’s delivering for the most part.
You Are Umasou
Really cute kiddie show. The episodes are only a minute or so long once you take into consideration the opening and closing credits, but it’s a lot of fun. T Rex adopts a little baby herbivore and they become buddies. It’s a sweet coming of age tale, with cannibalism.
Comic book goodness. That’s about all there is to say about it. It’s Iron Man. It does some Iron Maning. It isn’t stupid or anything like that. One of the few instances where you can say “it is what it is” and be taken seriously.
A Certain Magical Index 2
Probably shouldn’t be in this category since I totally forgot about it and had to edit it in after posting this damn post, but whatever. I like the world, and Index doesn’t seem to ignore it the way Raigun did. That alone makes it watchable.
The CUSP: Shit that’s RIGHT THERE and REALLY wants to be fucking awesome, but aint’ quite.
Needs more camp. Once it crosses that line, and once we get further along into the heads of everyone, this should be a near-masterpiece.
Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru
Great potential for Azumanga Daioh-level sitcom antics. Right now it’s on the cusp, but it could go either way. And it has a fucking AWESOME opening song.
Shinryaku! Ika Musume
Best show of the season. It’s already paid off on the sitcomness the way I’m hoping Soredemo will, it just hasn’t quite passed that awesomeness threshold. It’s RIGHT THERE looking in on that divine level. Hopefully it’ll have the guts to cross over.
