Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou

June 19, 2010

Anime review tiem. Straightforward and without any delusional conspiracy theories like how that CAD! Landon woulda done it.

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou is about this guy, y’know, and he’s attending Harry Potter school in a futuristic and magical world. He wants to be the Pope when he grows up, but when they put him in front of the “sorting hat”, it predicts he will become Zeromus (aka a Demon Lord) instead. This freaks everyone out and hilarity ensues. Also, there’s a harem in this anime.

While the premise of a guy who is destined to become a Demon Lord (+ hilarity ensues) is as solid a premise as any; unfortunately, the sad fact of the matter is that this show is highly unfocused. The script and the execution jumps all over the place, with both the occasionally genuinely funny and cool bits mixed in with unfunny bits that fail. In the end, this takes its toll and the series is slowly dragged down to the realm of mediocrity.

In trying to hit all the Evil Overlord tropes while shoehorning a harem (and all its associated tropes) setting as well, and the prerequisite serious background story for the inevitable somewhat serious finale, Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou just put too much on its plate in the “all you can eat buffet” and ended up having to pay for the excess leftovers.

Since this is not a show where I feel like talking about the stuff that happened because of how super keen they were, it means there are no spoilers and I’m just talking about the series in a pretty vague manner. So I’ll wrap things up now. Basically, this is not a show I would recommend. Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou is not the worst show I’ve ever seen. I won’t even call it “horrid” like I do with some others. But there are enough laaaaaaaame bits that I can’t recommend it, despite the occasional cool parts.

I’d score Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou a D+. I can’t give it a “C” of any sort because that might imply I’d mildly recommend it, but the premise is good with the occasional decent execution, so that’s what the “+” is for.

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou: D+

P.S. If you DO decide to check out this show, I recommend getting the “censored” version. It’s funnier because of the censorship art and texts like “Don’t look!” or “Not happenin’!”. The uncensored version doesn’t really show anything and losses the humor. At most, you’d just get drawn nipples.

This series sounded kinda cool at first. “Dude is destined to become Satan but wants to Gandhi. Hijinks ensue.”

Then, yeah, I heard the harem aspect was shoehorned in. What, having a series about a dude fighting his destiny to KILL EVERYTHING ON EARTH isn’t interesting enough, so you felt the need to toss in a herd of cows that want to bang the main dude? Yeah, a little fan service is fine and all, but why does “showing tits and ass” have to become a plot point rather than something you just toss in for amusement?

Y’all can have hot chicks in an anime without turning it into a harem anime, dudes-in-Japan-that-make-this-shit. Stop it already.

Stopped watching this because the female characters were grating to follow and felt more like parodies than genuine characters.
