Pretty Cure Primer
EPIC, thy name is Pretty Cure All Star DX.
Yeah, so I saw and I’m rewatching and rewatching the Pretty Cure All Star Deluxe movie, and I’mma gonna do a review for it for Mecha Guignol, but first, a short, sharp lesson!
The ways I figure it, you don’t need to be a huge fan of PreCure to enjoy the movie. I only watched the first season and a few random eps and clips from the other seasons, but still enjoyed it. I got some of the references, and none of the rest, but it’s still good in the hood. Still, some passing knowledge of the series probably wouldn’t hurt, so here’s a primer for the series and characters you’ll come across in the movie, before the actual movie review.
In the beginning, there was Pretty Cure, consisting of Cure Black and Cure White. Together, they fought the SOVEREIGN of the Guild of Calamitous Intent. And all was well. In fact, all was so well that there came a second season called Max Heart, which added the character Shiny Luminous. This is the version that’s in the movie.
Then came the third season, called Splash Star. Which had expy versions of Black and White, named Cure Bloom and Cure Egret respectively.
YES! 5 GOGO (there’s actually SIX of them)
The Power Rangers incarnation, this iteration of the PreCure franchise (Yes! Pretty Cure 5) went the route of Sailor Moon by having 5 primary PreCures and a Sixth Ranger added on in the second year (Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!). They are Cure Dream, Cure Rouge (huh?), Cure Lemonade (yes…), Cure Aqua and her ambiguously straight life partner Cure Mint.
Finally there’s Fresh Pretty Cure, which had only been showing on TV for about a month when the Pretty Cure All Star DX movie came out. They consist of Cure Peach, Cure Berry and Cure Pine.
That is all, for now.
